Do you have a ‘personal style’…you know a look that you’re known for? Taking note of what is a common theme in your wardrobe is a good insight into working out what your personal style is. Look at colour, print, lengths and textures and you will find out what your clothes say about you.
I’ve been looking back on my pics and I can’t say that I do. I have certain colours that I’m always drawn to like blues, winter white, moroon and pinks…and black and grey. I love black, sometimes all black and sometimes I use it to anchor my outfit. I also love print, usually on the bottom half. I love polka dots but they don’t love me Wah! I find a free moving print good, even better if it has blurred borders 🙂
I also love necklaces and am a massive fan of a scarf but not such a fan of a bracelet or watch even though I own quite a few. I occasionally wear earrings but not drop earrings, fussy hey! I love shoes, boy do I love them but I have big feet which can limit my choices. When the weather is warmer you’ll find me wearing sandals or a canvas sneaker, in winter it’s all about the boots.
I almost always wear a jacket or vest when wearing pants, a skirt or dress but sometimes I’ll let dresses do the hard work themselves.
My style is a little eclectic, you might even say multi personality! One day it could be a beachy kaftan dress the next a structured skirt with boots and a jacket. I like that though, I dress for how I feel…or how I want to feel on the day. I love colour and especially love how it can enhance my mood.
I’m not afraid of mixing all my wardrobe pieces together to create new looks, in fact I encourage you all to do it. When purchasing clothes think about what it will mix back with in your existing wardrobe. How many outfits can you create with that piece? Will it enhance existing outfits that you currently wear?
Personally I’m not great at getting ‘dressed up’, you know frocking up for an event. I much prefer smart casual. I hate thongs, not the Lacey kind (don’t wear them these days) but the flip flop, kind, I just can’t do them.
I love the ‘thought’ of a hat but since chemo I feel weird about wearing a hat or head scarf, I can do headbands though 🙂
I own lots of gorgeous leather handbags but prefer to carry a clutch or pouch wallet. I like the simplicity of a keycard, cash, lipgloss, phone…that’s it. Pop it in a little zip up pouch and I’m out the door. I love sunglasses and over the last few years have built up a little collection of good sunglasses, only one pair is black, I like coloured frames to compliment what I wear. I guess I like those little details.
So by writing this post I’ve worked out that I actually do have a personal style, it’s just pretty varied and I’m not ruled by it. If something appeals to me and I think I can make it work I give it a crack. I also dress very differently in the warmer months than I do in the winter months, but that’s ok…variety is the spice of life.
I was a bit ‘out there’ at high school, not fitting into the conformity of the barbie dolls at my Gold Coast high school…I stood up at my year 12 formal to make a speech…made the v for victory sign and proclaimed “variety is the spice of life”…right there in that moment my school peers ‘got me’ and applauded….because it’s true. Being different is ok, being conformist is ok. Variety IS the spice of life!
What about you, have you given thought to your personal style?
If you don’t know then start writing like I did and see what comes out.
I’d love to know what your personal style is, tell me 🙂
