I’ve been a fan of embroidery since I was about six, maybe seven. I have vivid memories of a white off the shoulder top with pretty blue embroidery across the front and there was also my yellow boob tube playsuit (yes you read right) with embroidered palm trees. Let’s not forget my velour and embroidered clogs teamed with embroidered dresses when I was nine, I loved stomping around in those clogs and the sound they made on shop floors. Pretty much most of my wardrobe had embroidered work because it was the seventies and eighties maaaaan.
Smocking, embroidery, fringing, you name it, it all holds a place in my heart and I love it. But things changed, something happened between nine and now. I got taller, older and fatter and the embroidered looks I love so much didn’t seem to reach my size range, the plus size range. Hey, just because I have a bigger arse and guts than ‘some’ women in society doesn’t mean I don’t matter and certainly doesn’t mean my style is invisible.
Inclusion matters.
Thankfully the design team at Adrift get that and are inclusive when releasing new season styles. It’s no secret I love Adrift, and when you find something you love you hold onto it tight… am I right? Recently I flew north to Brisbane for some work and while I was in town did a photo shoot with Adrift. Um hello middle aged mumma from the burbs getting her fancy face on! Having my makeup professionally done is always a treat, if you get a chance, get yours done sometime, it’s a great way to learn some handy tips.
I adore catching up with the team when I’m in Brisbane and the shoot was so much fun. If you receive the Adrift email you will have seen me in your inbox sporting some fabulous embroidered dresses, makes me chuckle when I open an email with my face on it. What I love is that Adrift are inclusive, they are determined to represent a broad range of sizes in their designs and also in images on their website and in their marketing, bravo!

Hello there Mandala dress in blue available in sizes XS/S-3XL/4XL. Wear it off the shoulder or on the shoulder, belted or loose. I’ve teamed this dress with Belles Latte boots available from Cinori Shoes in sizes 36-42.
aaaaand check out Bansuri Dress in navy available in sizes XS/S-3XL/4XL. Long sleeved, lined with tassel tie and the most incredible embroidery. I’ve teamed this beauty with knee high boots from Wittner. I think the blue are sold out but you can still grab black leather or black suede but hurry as they are on sale.
I’d like to say a huge thanks to local photographer Josh Todd who I engaged to take some photos for me. We shot in character filled Port Adelaide and I may have flashed my arse roadside more than once 🙂
Tell me, did you wear as much embroidery as me in your youth? What about now?
Til next time,
Jen x

I did I loved embroidery too, I am a 60s baby so it featured heavily for me too, I remember denim bell bottoms with red embroidered flowers, a fur lined vest with embroidery, I had clogs too!! I remember being passed down a pair of really high wedges from my older cousin Michelle who I thought back then was the epitome of fashion, I adored those shoes, black suede embroidered tops on a wooden platform!! You look beautiful, I love both dresses, gorgeous!! I have two Adrift embroidered tops I love but I think I need a dress now! Lx
Bell bottoms, a vest AND clogs….you would have felt like the bees knees Lianne, very cool!
I don’t recall clogs, but growing up in the 70’s I wore many a pantsuit in velour (groovy baby!) and so much smocking with embroidery- I loved it. Even embroidered jeans! I had a pair of funky white patent leather high boots that I wore with everything! So funny. Nothing as beautiful as the Adrift embroidery though!
There are ladies who do beautiful embroidered clothes that are sold near Hudsons coffee shop at Memorial hospital. OMG the embroidery and smocking are beautiful. Just stocked up on babies gifts. The dresses made my heart melt. Bought some little boys singlets with embroidery on them.
Love those dresses you look gorgeous.??
You rock everything you wear!
