When I say ruffles, do you immediately think of straight laced Queen Victoria, bad 80s bridesmaid dresses or the socks you wore when you were 10? Well ladies it’s time to rethink how we think about ruffles.
Ruffles are our Trend to Try this month. This floaty, feminine detail is everywhere right now, in tops, dresses, skirts and accessories. Heck it’s even in homewares but that’s a whole other post. When it comes to ruffles there’s something for everyone and even though the weather is confused and crazy we are soon to head into spring so let’s take a look at ruffles.
No longer conservative or fussy, ruffles are totally adaptable to today’s wardrobes and lifestyles, fun and flirty for weekend wear or bold and structured for the office.
Let’s have a look at some of the ways you can wear ruffles taking some inspiration from some of my favourite Instagram stylistas! While I don’t have links for all outfits featured I do have most, follow the highlighted text and you can be ruffling up a fab outfit in a jiffy!
Ruffles With Denim
Ruffles can be feminine or bold, a perfect match with a laid back fabric like denim. If you’re wearing your ruffles with short skirts or shorts, try to match the length of your ruffles to the length of your bottom layer, like I have here with my denim shorts. It will make you look longer. Take your cues with skinny jeans paired with voluminous ruffles like @stace_mcgregs and @gypsytigerlily. Elegant ruffles like @emilyberlach with distressed denim makes an amazing clash of styles.
There’s no mistaking ruffles are perfect to wear in summer. Ruffles can take you from day to night with a change of shoe or adding some sparkle – perfect holiday style. Yes, all these Insta babes (did I just call myself a babe?…you betchya) are actually on holiday – but you can totally steal their holiday vibe without ever leaving home!
Off the shoulder ruffles like I am wearing and the lovely @yummomummo lend themselves to some summer fun in the sun, be it a Bali beach or a backyard BBQ. Or channel some beautiful boho vibes like @andandreastyle and @my_hippy_heart in classic white or fun florals.
Ruffles Mixed With Pattern
Patterns in a ruffle create shape & movement. Patterns work brilliantly clashing like @forty_up with her florals and stripes (I love that combo), or with block colour basics like me. Perhaps choose a pattern you love and totally commit to it like babes @curvyamelia and @almostposh. Their print & ruffle combos take the hard work out of styling – there’s nothing else needed to make their outfit shine!
Where to Ruffle
Ruffles can be a great way to trick the eye into flattering particular parts of your body. Want to draw the eye away from your breasts, then play your ruffles low, say on the end of your sleeve like @icurvy or at the bottom of your dress or skirt like @curvysam. Ruffles are meant to shine, be feature and also be fun so don’t be too strict with rules, ok. Do we love how @malindawithan_a has teamed metallic heels to turn her ruffles into a cute party look while @realmumstyle has made her ruffle take a back seat with fun statement accessories? I dunno about you but I do!
Accessories To Ruffle Your Style
Don’t think the ruffle is for your body? Think again – you can still try this trend as you’ll find ruffles in the most unexpected places like bags, swimwear and sandals. You can easily incorporate some (or all) of these into your wardrobes.
How do you feel about ruffles? Is it a look you’ll try? Me? I am all in!
