I love introducing you all to new labels and new stores and this week we are taking a peek inside ‘Cotton On Broadway’. I’ve been shopping here for a few years and really love the personal touch of a small boutique. If you are local to Adelaide you might like to check them out next time you are in Glenelg or you can all check out their Facebook page. Ok let’s get started…
Describe your business?
It started after a trip to India years ago where I fell in love with their cottons, when I returned home I started selling homewares in cotton. I chose the name ‘Cotton On Broadway’ and four months later the chain ‘Cotton On’ started, meh…. I didn’t think they’d last so wasn’t too bothered by the name similarity LOL. In 2008 I went on holiday to Mooloolaba and picked up 20 shirred dresses which flew out the door and I kinda fell into clothing, it grew from there. It took me a while to find my niche but I have and I’m happy and so are my customers.
How long have you been in Glenelg?
12 years
What prompted you to set up shop in Glenelg?
My husband Mark already owned the building, he designs and builds kitchens and furniture and has been here over 30 years. Mark was looking to rent out half the shop and I threw my hat in the ring. He picked me…smart man.
Favourite indulgent treat?
Wine!
Top 3 fave things about running your own business?
I don’t open until 10 am so I get to have a quiet morning cuppa, go for a walk, peg out the washing and put dinner on for the family. I meet great people and have formed lovely relationships with my customers. I love seeing them transform and leave happy.
Holiday…beach or rainforest?
Rainforest
How has retail business changed for you?
I think customers are seeking a more personal relationship, they need that. Purchasing clothes is personal and trust is important.
I enjoy a morning walk every day and Saturdays are for me. I lie on the couch for a lengthy session of watching Seinfeld re runs or the movie channel. I love it!
Pants or skirt?
Pants
Chocolate or cheese?
Chocolate…could go either way especially if there was a glass of white involved.
You can’t live without?…
My husband Mark.
My phone! I’m serious!! When I have my annual holiday on kangaroo island it’s always bliss leaving it behind.
I would like to say a big thanks to Katie for opening her store and her heart up to me and all of you. She’s a bit camera shy but pop in store and say hi because she’s always up for a hug and a laugh.
Til next time,
Jen x
