Do you have multi purpose pieces of clothing in your wardrobe? How do you grow your wardrobe using what you’ve already got?
Start by looking at each piece of clothing with new eyes. What are the extras that those pieces can give you?
I’ve always been a fan of multipurpose pieces, reinventing clothing in new ways to create new looks. Just because you have a particular piece doesn’t mean you can’t wear it in ways other than it was intended for. Dresses are one of the easiest garments to get multiple outfits from, pop over a tank or tee, add a belt or jacket around the waist to give you shape and voila a new outfit!
I’ve had this vintage dress for years but it’s sat neglected in my wardrobe for a few years…until now. On its own it doesn’t do too much for me…
I could add a jacket but it’s summer and vintage fabrics can be a bit hot to wear so I need to think ‘outside the square’. The dress is pretty with its soft pinks, floral pattern and frill so for my personality I wanted to harden it up a bit and what better way than to add a rock star stripe tank. I picked up this one super cheap at Cotton On…you’d be surprised how generous the sizing of some of their stuff can be.
Adding a denim jacket around my waist creates shape and covers where the tank meets the dress. It also picks up the blue in the dress which helps to tie it all together. Sure it’s not a look for everyone but I like the juxtaposition of pretty with rock n roll and how well does this new *necklace from the Adorn Collective finish my outfit off?! Perfect.
I preferred to keep the shoes on the quieter side in a tan, there’s enough going on already. I added the wedge to give me some height as a full length dress can swamp my frame. I then tried it with a darker tank…everything else stayed the same but I created another look. With the darker tank this outfit would be perfect for an evening BBQ or casual meal.
Creating new looks is excellent when travelling, more choice with less to pack and less to think about.
Do you think a tank over a dress is something you might try?
Til next time,

Wow! I never would have thought to do this! And it looks fabulous!! I’ve got a couple of maxi dresses I think I might have to have a play with and see if I can pull it off… The only thing I’m worried about us tying my denim jacket around my middle…. It might make me look bulkier than I already am…. But, I’ll give it a shot!! I’ve got a denim vest too maybe I can out a t under that…. Possibilities!!!
Yay Kerry, I love that you want to try new things! I gotta say I love wearing a jacket around my waist it can really give me shape, the trick is to fold the collar in to get a clean line. You can also try a low slung belt. x
You are rocking that Ramones tank. I love that look on you! Perfect!
Thanks Jess, some days we need a little bit of rock star! X
I would definitely wear a tank over a dress – if I owned a dress… (I own a few but they dont see the light of day much. Ha!)
