The seasons are changing and I’m not just talking about the weather. The kids have moved out and no longer are we ‘making do’ and foregoing stylish pieces in our home ‘just in case’ the kids trash it.
Over the last couple of years I’ve completed some ‘big & small jobs’ around the house and ticked off some wish list items. Sure, I’ve made some big mistakes, expensive mistakes over the years when it comes to choosing furniture but these days I have time to really think about my home style and how I want my home to make me feel.
For years we made do with foldable dining chairs and when we were a bit more cashed up we upgraded to some very cool Tolix chairs which I loved, but the boys trashed. Damn those oversized school bags and cricket bags.
So when the youngest moved out of home I started hatching a plan and researching for dining furniture options. I started a pinterest board (a great way to gain inspiration and also find your personal style) and went window shopping at all the usual suspects. What I found through at each store was more of the same, on trend pieces that just felt a little ‘same same’.
Understanding our personal home style
Creating a home the Huz and I both feel comfortable in means some give and take when it comes to styling. We both needed to be on the same page and come to agreeance on our furniture choices which means we had to have a conversation about colour, quality, styling and also budget.
What we realised is after all these years we had come full circle and we wanted a dining table that was timeless in shape, while still fitting the vibe of our home. That’s when I ventured into Matt Blatt Furniture Adelaide, be still my quirky/stylish heart.
Now Matt Blatt are known for quirky (which I guess is why I took so long to venture in) but also amazing replica pieces! The huz is an architect and many furniture designs over the decades were actually designed by architects, so he kinda has a thing for them.
Me, I am more scandi/coastal inspired but I do like clean lines and the odd quirky piece. So, all in all shopping at Matt Blatt was a good choice for us.
Time to upgrade
I found our table straight away, although like most furniture stores I had to wait several weeks for delivery. I am soooo impatient, but this did give us time to sell our old table. We chose to hang on to our old chairs for a while because the budget was stretched and I didn’t want to jump in to another wrong choice.
Fast forward ten months and the youngest and his girlfriend were moving out of their tiny unit and into a house. Guess what furniture they needed? Dining chairs! Ha, this was a sign for me to head back into Matt Blatt Furniture and make the purchase I had been dreaming about for months. That’s right, when your kids move out you can pass off your old gear to them and upgrade guilt free. Bonus!
So here we are, my beautiful Oak dining table (find similar here) and six Hans Wegner Wishbone replica chairs. I chose four in Oak and a couple in ash (black). The black chairs will anchor the black in our lounge /dining room decor and break up the amount of oak furniture we have.
The final piece.
All I needed now was a new buffet. The spot in our dining room where a buffet sits is only 120cm wide, so this limits what furniture we can put there. Over the years we have had a bookcase and also a recycled buffet. I really wanted our ‘forever piece’ to look seamless and timeless and also be a piece we both loved. The Huz did NOT love this dresser I upcycled years ago and to be honest I was a little tired of it too.
I’ve been looking for that ‘forever piece’ for several years when out of the blue Matt Blatt Furniture offered me a collaboration I couldn’t pass up. So, I headed in store to Matt Blatt to see if I loved a buffet enough to make it mine, and yup you guessed it…I found our ‘forever piece’.
The Bakbo Oak tall cabinet has such beautiful lines, is oak like the rest of our furniture and I love the combination of drawers and cupboards (with shelves) to house my table linen and serving ware. Soft close doors and drawers were an added luxe touch.
All up the dining room makeover took around eighteen months. I’m super happy we didn’t rush our decisions, didn’t buy into trends and we added quality furniture to our home. I am still going to be a faffer (always will be) and love adding homewares and cushions to our spaces (who doesn’t). It feels good to have those big furniture items all ticked off.
Next on the list? I’m moving on to my bedroom and bathroom makeover, wish me luck?
Have you got anything on your furniture wish list? Any home projects you are dreaming of?
Til next time
Jen x
