Cancer treatment is the pits. Sure it’s life saving or life extending but let’s not sugar coat it, it sux. Of course there’s things we can do to make it more bearable and oncology massage is something I wish I knew more about when going through treatment.
To be honest I steered clear of massage throughout chemo because I was so scared of upsetting my lymphatic system, especially after having an auxiliary clearance. What I’ve now learned is I needn’t have been worried. Recently I’ve got to learn more about oncology massage through the team at ‘Oncology Massage Training’, yes that right a not for profit organisation dedicated to training massage therapists in specialised oncology massage. Hallelujah, as with anything cancer related, when I find a good thing I like to share.
OMT is an internationally recognised ‘not for profit organisation’ and their mission is to improve the quality of life for people with a cancer diagnosis or a cancer history. They provide access to safe and effective oncology massage…which is very different from your regular massage.
Sure I’ve tried lots of massage and physio and recently found one that’s working brilliantly for me but throughout treatment I could certainly have done with specialised massage post surgery and throughout chemo.
It’s an incredibly stressful time and even though I was mostly upbeat my body bore the brunt and found ways to carry that stress. If I’d had specialised treatment I’m sure it would have made a positive difference.
OMT are currently developing a standardised accredited training program and holding courses in regional areas as well as smaller communities. If you are a therapist and would love to develop in this area then please get in touch with them.
On the flip side if you are in the cancer circle and could do with some specialised massage then head to their website (links below) to find a therapist close to you.
If you would like to help the good people at OMT out you can pledge to their crowd funding. Money raised helps with resources, research and training.
I sure hope this helps others and gives hope, health and happiness to those who need it.
Til next time,
I’ve tagged Oncology Massage Training above (in green) but here’s the link again
