I’m not sure if you all know but I do some personal styling on the side and one of the questions I am asked without fail is ‘what colours suit me’? Ummm, how long is a piece of string? To be honest most of us can wear most colours but it comes done to tone and intensity. It also comes down to whether you are wearing the said colour near your face.
We may realllly love a colour but it might not love us so much so instead of never ever wearing it I always recommend wearing it in accessories , shoes or lower on the body…away from the face.
You want to collect clothes in complimentary colours that will work back with each other to enhance your wardrobe and give you more outfit choices. I always advise to start with ‘three colours’ that work well together and for one whole season only collect clothes in those colours. This will stop the overwhelm when you are shopping PLUS allow you to build up a good little capsule wardrobe.
If you like, as the seasons go on you can add one or two extra colours to the mix but to start with three is a good number.
Collect workhorse pieces.
For me my personal wardrobe is made up of lots of colours but there is definitely a handful of colours that you will see over and over. Blue is one of those colours. So, when this Tulip skirt in Azure from Adrift caught my eye I knew it would work and would work hard to create multiple outfits, making it a workhorse piece.
As soon as it arrived it was love, the shape, length, comfort and ohhhh those colours all stole my heart. Straight away I set about trying on a load of tops and jackets and creating outfits. Wouldn’t you know it my favourite top from last season went with it again, and again…and again.
When you love something, buy multiple.
Last year Taking Shape released the ‘box top’ and I loved it so much I purchased four! Lucky for me Taking Shape re-imagined the design and have released it again in eight new colours with a few design tweaks and changed the name to the ‘Riviera Top’. Well, when you love something get it in all the colours, right! I now have this top in black, navy and red for the new season and when I tried it on with my new skirt well….take a look….
This is a great example of how collecting pieces in your ‘best’ colours means you can always create an outfit.
You will notice I have used the same skirt, boots and necklace (an oldie) and just changed out the top but all three work. The navy top is the new season and the other two are carried over in my wardrobe from last winter.
These are the Izzy boots from Frankie4 Footwear, also available in wheat, tan, gunmetal and black.
Do you have a favourite look? Tell me which colour you like the most.
Til next time,

Oh Jen, as usual you look amazing. I’ve bought so many pieces because of you. I’ve been eyeing this skirt off but couldn’t imagine what I would wear on top. Didn’t even think of my navy TS top I bought after seeing you wear it last year. 😳 Looks like I’ll be adding it to my wardrobe now.
It’s a really fab skirt, enjoy
