A ritual is… a sequence of activities involving gestures, words or objects performed to a set sequence. I have many little rituals that I indulge in…some daily some weekly and some yearly. One of them is making a good cuppa tea.
It’s no secret I’d sell a child to pay for a good coffee, damn I need that liquid amber hit daily, it’s an indulgence that serves me well. I don’t drink alcohol, well maybe on a leap year so I unwind in the afternoon or evening with a cuppa tea. YES tea!
I like an English Breakfast occasionally, preferably in a pot served with a strainer on the saucer of a pretty teacup (all part of the ritual) but my favourite kinda tea is a good green tea.
Lately I’ve been indulging in an afternoon ritual of a cup of ‘Buddhas Tears‘,…no one is actually crying its the very cool name given to a green tea with jasmine blossoms.
Little balls of white Pekoe buds and young leaves that are hand rolled, each ‘tear’ unfurls in your cup as you sip and contemplate.
I pop 3-5 balls in my cup (depends on the size), add boiled hot water and a dash of cold water to cool my tea. Then I plant my arse, usually on the lounge on pergola and I watch the leaves unfurl in my cup. Slowly they come to life opening up and with each sip the flavour intensifies just a little. aaahhhhhh:-)
If more contemplation is needed just top up with hot water, yup this tea can take being rebrewed 1 or 2 more times…some days just need it.
Of course along with the tea the cup is definitely part of the ritual and I’m quite the collector of teacups, lately I’m digging on a lipped tumbler.
Do you have a favourite tea or tea ritual? Feel free to share in the comments section.
