It’s no secret that when the weather changes and the cool winds blow in I love a jacket, but not just any jacket. Oh who am I kidding I DO love any kind of jacket but right now I’m talking about all weather jackets, you know… ‘spray jackets’. They’re lightweight, stylish and comfy with a sporty twist.
When I was a kid the rain jacket was a thick bright yellow vinyl with big buttons down the front that were impossible to do up with cold fingers.Oh, it also came and a separate rain hat.Fast forward a few decades and spray jackets have come a long way in the style stakes…thank goodness.
These are the jackets you throw on for weekend sideline duty, walking the dog, Sunday coffee at the beach or a drive to the hills. While we want to be dry and we don’t wan to look boring, boxy or boyish, so what should you look for in spray jackets?
Think about what you’ll be using your jacket for
Will you be wearing your jacket to walk the dog? I know when we walk the dog it’s early morning or late at night when the temperature drops to ‘nipples at alert’ degrees. Either choose a snug jacket or one big enough to layer a jumper underneath.
Maybe you will be packing one ‘just in case’, so portability and weight might be important.
You might even want one that amps up the style if you plan on popping it on for coffee catchup after your morning walk.
Special features and benefits.
A two way zip is something that gets me excited…for real! Being able to open the zip from above and below means I can layer more underneath and have some room for expansion. I can also undo the zip a little from the bottom (pull up) and sit down comfortably.
A jacket with a toggle pull cord at the waist means I can ‘create a waist’. Cinch it in for more shape or release it a little for layering underneath.
A hood is cool but also uber handy if you get caught in the wind and the rain…pina colada optional.
Who doesn’t love pockets? They are great for keeping hands warm, doggie treats and coffee cash, bonus points for concealed pockets on the ‘inside’ of the jacket.
Some all weather jackets are magical and fold up into themselves, like actually fold into a pocket, which is great for travelling or throwing into a bag if the weather looks iffy and you like to be prepared.
