Does your bathroom need a detox? You know…do you need to do a once over and declutter beauty and body products? All beauty and body products have a use by date, it’s normally on the back of the product and the symbol looks like an open jar. On toothpaste and product in tubes it will be on the very end of the tube in numerics.
The purer the product the shorter the shelf life because…no preservatives. Usually an organic product has a shelf life of around 6 months once opened.
Mascara should be replaced every 3 months. I know right, sounds often doesn’t it? Let’s face it, no one looks pretty with crusty, flaky mascara…or an eye infection so ditch it and replace regularly. Don’t ever add water or saliva to your mascara either…breeding ground for yuck.
Eye shadows should be ditched after 2 years and eye pencils after a year. Don’t think of the money you spent think of the bacteria lurking, and ditch it!
Get rid of lipsticks and lip pencils at the 2 year mark, lipgloss needs to be replaced after 12 months. MAC have a great recycling programme, take in 6 empty MAC containers (almost any product) and receive a free lippy.
Oil free foundations have a 12 month shelf life while all others can stick around for 18 months. If your foundation goes clumpy, separates or has an icky odour then bin it.
Nail polish will last around two years. Fungal infections aren’t pretty so ditch the polish and get a new one. OPI do mini polish pots and don’t forget brands like BUTTER who make a polish without the nasties like formaldehyde, DBP and toluene…colour without compromise.
Let’s not forget things like your loofah and razor. Razors need to be replaced every 2-4 weeks depending how often you use them. Loofahs bite the dust every 3 months.
Wash make up brushes after each use using a makeup cleanser. I use the MAC cleanser but know of some makeup artists who use LUX flakes.
Tooth brushes should be replaced as soon as they start looking shabby, around every 6-8 weeks.
A little tip try switching to soap in a pump bottle, more hygienic, less bacteria and measured control to reduce wastage.
Don’t forget cleaning your bathroom, ditch the nasty chemicals and use vinegar and bi carb.
So now you’ve had a reminder at what could be lurking in your bathroom it might pay to head in there and take a look around.

Great tips and ideas there Jen. I use on my bathroom tiles the Chux Magic block eraser the one for bathrooms. I used them when I had my open inspections and they were a lifesaver. They aren’t very expensive either. I also use them to wipe down cupboards.. I’m about to do a massive make up ditch today as I have my makeup spread out in two bathrooms. So de clutter it is. Lip glosses I’m ditching first I never wear them so out they go. I need storage ideas on bathrooms have you got any tips. Would love to hear. Xo
Thanks for the tips Jane x
So many top tips – I’m such a hoarder I reckon at least half the contents of my bathroom are past the best before date! xx
We have zero storage in our bathroom which stops me from collecting x
I hate to think how old my mascara is but it is definitely more than 3 months old! Thanks for the reminder!
