It’s no secret I now work with a trainer two days a week, but what am I doing on the other five days a week? Well, I’m moving my body. Nothing too strenuous, it’s not about keeping a cracking pace or lifting massive weights, it’s more about recovery, flexibility and stamina.
This weekend has been overcast and rainy which isn’t the most ideal workout weather. Then again, when it’s steamy and hot I’m not a fan of getting outside and moving my body either…but I’m doing it.
But what happens when the weather isn’t great and motivation is waning? I have a few tips that get me out the door, thought I would share.
Layer like a player
Wearing the right workout gear is also about wearing the ‘right weight’ clothing. There’s nothing worse than feeling overheated or too cold mid workout and not being able to do a damn thing to change it. My tip is wear breathable fabrics and layer up.
If it’s cold I wear a tank or tee plus a lightweight long sleeve tee that I can strip off if I need to. A jumper around the waist isn’t just for covering my arse, it’s also handy if the wind whips up or if rain starts. Wear your workout tights at a length that you feel comfortable, longer for cool weather and shorter for hot weather. For some reason a bit of bare skin around the ankle just keeps my core temperature right no matter the season.
Set some goals
When motivation is waning it’s too easy to fall off the wagon and make excuses, am I right? The easiest way to keep going is to set yourself some small achievable goals. Working your way towards achieving a goal is far easier than just winging it, having purpose will give you results.
You might want to walk a certain number of steps, increase reps or weight, introduce an extra day of workout or even a whole new exercise. Goal setting might also be around your food, think about meal preparation and snacks to keep you on your path.
Grab a workout buddy for motivation
I’m not one for exercising in groups, I prefer my own company but sometimes when motivation is waning a workout buddy can be just what I need. I often ride the bike with the huz, we include a brunch or cuppa and my exercise also doubles as a date, winning.
You could try a walking or running group, add in a group gym session or even switch up meetings and catchups with friends to include a walk and talk instead of coffee in a cafe.
Boost your body
Keeping your body in top top shape is essential, especially if you are asking more from it with exercise. To keep my body ticking over well I need to get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and eat regularly. When I’m not doing all of those things I’m outa whack, tired and not motivated. I’m also a bit of a cranky bitch!
On the days I do workouts with the trainer I take a protein powder afterwards to help with recovery and I rub on some magnesium cream to help with sore muscles. A few extra supplements don’t hurt either, I take garlic, echinacea, vitamin D, magnesium, Turmeric and Ginko Biloba.
All the colours of the rainbow
This is my secret weapon, wearing colourful workout wear just makes me happy. The brighter the better! Even though I’m curvy I’m spoiled for choice and have a few favourite labels like Running Bare, Active Truth and Runfaster Gear. You can aslo take a look at this post I wrote a while ago on plus size workout gear.
A discount just for you
Ladies I also have a little discount code from the team at ACTIVE TRUTH for you, enter code JENSTAR at checkout for 10% off your order, code expires march 31st 2017
Keeping with bright colours I also take that across to my shoes, sports bra and even my workout equiptment like hand weights and stretch bands.
Let’s not forget food too, after all we eat with our eyes first so make colourful meals to keep you motivated and to help you stay on track.
Have you got any motivation tips you would like to share? I need all the help I can get 🙂
