Boobs, the girls, jugs, ta tas, titties, breasts, hooters, cans… Whatever you call them if you are putting them inside a bra them you need to find the right one for you and believe me, not all bras are created equal. Oh, for the record mine are ‘Foobs’ ( fake boobs), when I get nipples I’ll call them ‘noobs’ (new boobs), nah just kidding, they will be boobs!
Oh hello, I’m in my underwear (again), yes the mister and I snapped some pics in my City Chic lingerie…just for the record not one photo has been filtered or touched up. This is me, I’m not perfect but I’m proud of my body and accept all of it, even stretch marks and my scars(of which there are plenty).
My mister is a funny dude, totally made me snort laugh in these pics below when he told me to think sexy. As if! 🙂
Buying the right bra (for you) starts with knowing your magic numbers…your measurements. Back, cup and under breast measurements will always help you to find your right bra.
For goodness sake head to a lingerie store and get measured, the ladies who work in these stores have seen it ALL, so don’t be embarrassed. There’s lots of formulas for getting the right measurements but they can be confusing and I don’t know about you but my Foobs are different sizes and a little difficult to fit so I prefer to get professional help.
I’ve been through a few changes with my Foobs, first I had two then breast cancer took one, then both. I had surgery to remove skin, tissue and muscles from my back to form new Foobs.
First I had tissue expanders inserted and gradually (over months) had them filled with saline to stretch the skin. Yes it was freakin painful! Then another surgery to remove the expanders and swap them for implants…nipples later this year.
Over this time I’ve worn ‘many’ types of bras from post surgery, crop, bamboo, wire free, mastectomy bra with prostheses and some pretty sexy wire bras.
I’ve had great service and shocking service in lingerie stores and lingerie departments. There’s a blog post coming about the bad service one but ultimately you’re in control of your body and how you feel so be open with your salesperson, be honest, communicate and trust your gut.
If the service is lacking then speak up or walk away and try somewhere else…you owe yourself that.
Buying the right bra for you will improve your shape, self confidence and posture…it will also make your clothes sit and look better. Here’s my top tips…
When trying on a bra start by loosening off the straps and then adjust the straps to fit once you’re properly ‘in’ the bra.
Lean forward and lift your breasts into the cups, ensure the soft flesh at the sides is covered too.
If the bra is flattening you out its the wrong size. Uni boobs be banished…unless you are wearing a crop style bra (I wear one to yoga), you actually want to have your bra lay flat between your breasts.
If your breast spill over the cups and your nipples peek out then you are in the wrong size.
If the straps are digging into your shoulders adjust them or change the size.
The strap should not ride up your back, it should sit straight and a little lower and feel snug but
comfortable. If the band is riding up then adjust the straps or try a smaller size.
When you are fitted into your bra your nipples should sit halfway between your elbow and shoulder (I learnt this one from watching OPRAH)
If you have sloping shoulders and find your straps always slip down then try a racer back style.
Underwire shouldn’t dig or pinch, it also shouldn’t cut into the breast tissue. If the underwire is uncomfortable then try a different style or go for a wire free bra.
Raise your arms above your head, if the bra jumps up and you see breast tissue then the fit is wrong, your band should stay in place but make sure it’s not too tight, especially when you sit as our ribs expand when sitting.
If you are exercising then wear a sports bra.
Try on lots of styles of bras, you will never know the difference that different styles will make to your shape if you don’t try.
Don’t store anything inside your bra (especially phones!) that’s what handbags are for.
When you lose or gain weight ( by a size or more) go and get fitted for a new bra.
Got a favourite name for your boobs? Any disasters in a lingerie change room?
