Today is my wedding anniversary, twenty three years married to the same person. I was twenty one when we met, engaged just five months later and married at twenty three. At the time we didn’t feel too young for marriage, even though today most people will tell me twenty three is waaay too young to be married.
Ummm, bollocks! We are all different. Our life experiences that shape us also different. Get married or don’t get married…at any age that is right for you is what I say. It may work out, it may not. It may last until old age or be cut short far too early. None of us has the right to pass judgement on love.
Me? its worked out sweet. The huz is my partner in life and love and we have been through some awesome times and some very challenging times, however never has our bond been tested. We have always remained a tight team. We don’t go in for big anniversary celebrations, I don’t even own any flashy jewellery. We normally exchange a card, maybe a small gift and spend the day together. Today was no different, although he did put some thought into the gifts.
I have always wanted an Adirondack chair, and today I have one! It even has a fancy pull out foot stool and he delivered it with a home magazine and flowers.
Yes flowers! It’s been more than a decade since the huz brought me flowers, he reckons that because I always buy them myself that it’s not so special. But, today he handed me a big bunch of lilies, a change of heart I welcome.
I gave him an iPad cover (boring, but I bought him a new iPad for his birthday last week) and a succulent plant in a silver (metal) pot because apparently twenty three years is when you exchange something silver…apparently. The plant is for his desk, he’s taken to nurturing and growing avocado trees from seed and I love watching him tender to his plants. I figured a little desk plant might be a nice way to connect with nature and force him to just be in the moment during stressful times at the office.
Our day saw us jump in the car to return the iPad cover because it was the ‘wrong bloody size’, he’s going to choose one online so it’s not a total write off. We then popped in to good ole Kmart to grab a budget rug, I have the same one in my office and figured it would do just nicely for this little space.
Then it was off for a Sunday drive to the Adelaide hills for lunch at Patch Kitchen and Garden in Stirling,a sweet little cafe with character in a sweet little town….
Followed by some time spent browsing in the local homewares stores, I have my eye on this bench from 29Milan…
The huz even managed to snap an anniversary outfit pic for me, this is the frock I purchased from City Chic earlier in the week, I’m in medium. Teamed with bag from Gitanjali, earrings from SEED and shoes from Wittner. Note to self, wear more red!
We visited a couple more little towns before heading home to do some Sunday chores, which surprisingly didn’t feel like a drag because we did them together. Today we chatted and reminisced about our first twenty five years spent together. We are headed into a new stage of life, one with adult children and time just for us. We talked about what the next twenty five years would look like and we both agreed that there will always be country Sunday drives with cake, but we are also planning some overseas trips. Exciting!
I can’t wait to discover more of this big bright world with my mate by my side, creating the next chapter and beyond of our story.
Til next time,
