Not all days (or months) are all ‘sunshine and lollipops’, sometimes you just get the ‘blahs’. You know the feeling, those times in life where you lack motivation, feel flat, drag your feet and just generally need a kick up the arse!
I’ve been there…have you?
We can all sit in the ‘blahs’, wallow in the heaviness of procrastination and pity, or we can be proactive and kick the ‘blahs’ to the curb. Sounds easy right?
Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t, the trick is to actually do something. Anything!
Do the things that bring you joy. The things that give you all the warm fuzzy feels and have you smiling on the inside. You don’t need to do ALL the things ALL the time, but make an effort and you will be rewarded. Do it alone or enlist a friend to join you, soon enough the ‘blahs’ will be replaced with the ‘Heck Yeahs’! 🙂
TIME TO GET GOING
So what can you do? How about you try one, some or all of these…
.grab a cuppa. Pop the kettle on, grab your favourite cup and make a cuppa….and just sit.
.dance. Dance like no one is watching, pump up the jam and get your groove on.
.read a book. Find somewhere cosy and get lost in a book.
.take a bath. Close the door, light a candle and pop in some of your favourite smelly stuff and enjoy.
.get out in nature. Walk in the park or just explore your suburb.
.get some vitamin SEA. Walk on the beach, dip your toes in the ocean or dive in and let the salt water heal you.
.play some music. Pop in your earphones when doing mundane tasks and dance on the inside.
.go hiking. Grab a mate or join a hiking group and get back in touch with the beauty of mother nature while getting fit.
.diffuse some essential oils. Sounds woo woo but I swear by essential oils, I even wear one as a daily perfume to enhance my mood.
.pat a pet. Animals are intuitive and great companions, spend some time with your pet or visit someone who has one.
.de-clutter the mess. When there is clutter it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, de-clutter your home/workspace and feel instantly lighter and relaxed.
.do for others. Sometimes doing something nice or something helpful for someone else is rewarding for you too 🙂
.get in the garden. Sit in it, walk in it or get your hands dirty in it.
.get cooking. Ok, making meals for the family day in and day out can feel like drudgery, but baking your favourite dish or trying a new culinary delight can be rewarding…and yummy!
.use the best of everything. Go on, don’t leave anything ‘for best’, the best time is RIGHT NOW. Wear your good underwear, spritz the perfume, eat from the finest crockery, use the good crystal. You get the picture 🙂
.play. Finding your inner child by playing with children taps into joy and innocence. Let go of the adult stuff weighing you down and play with the kids.
.netflix and chill. Look, I know what this term means for the young folk but for the huz and I it means curling up on the couch and settling in for an hour or two of binge watching our favourite series.
Tell me, what do you do when you get a case of the ‘blahs’?
til next time,
Jen x
I love all these ideas.
I LOVE to read and I do it everyday.
I also love to talk to my two best friends. They can either soothe my worries with a hug or kick me up the bum whichever is required. One lives close by and the other in Qld , so cyber hugs suffice. ?
I’ve picked up reading again and am loving it…a lovely escape 🙂
Solid list of suggestions There Jen, I might start ticking them off one by one. I’m interested in finding out more about essential oils, I love the ones I have!
I’ve dabbled in oils for a decade or so but over the last 2 years they are now a part of my everyday life.
Just what I needed to hear/read
Thanks ?
Brilliant Allison, I love it when my writing connects x
I love this so hard! I’m going through a bit of a blah stage and this resonates so much with me. Chronic pain is my blah and there’s nothing better for me than to sit in the sun (90% of Tasmanian’s are vitamin D deficient!) and read a book. Books are my escape from reality and I have great joy in loosing myself in a magnificent book ( today it’s Stephen king’s Duma Key, second reading). Jen, keep what you are doing, you are spreading kindness wherever you go x thank you ❤️- ps my new Frankie4’s Hilary and Ellie’s are freaking awesome!!! Big love 💖
Great read Jen..and I do quite a few of your suggestions, but one thing that always and I mean always, brightens me up, is playing Christmas Carols. For some reason, that music seems to take me to an inner peace and I am calm, which helps me get out of my ‘blah’ feeling..lol…funny, I know..xx
Oh, I can totally see how Ann, christmas carols bring me such joy. I might have to try playing my christmas carols outside of scheduled times 🙂
For me our Dozer is priceless (dog). Also use and wear your best stuff
Music always helps
I’d be lost without my dog too Bev, he’s been such a constant in my life and a wonderful companion.
Yep agree with them all music is a staple for me and the sea. ?
The sea is necessary for me every day Maxine x
Strange as it sounds, TV relaxes me – I can totally zone out & get caught up in something else for a while. Reading does the same I guess but with more work – ha ha! xx
Totally get that Shannon, I’m the same.
I go to Bikram, I get more sleep, I pamper myself, I boof my hair up, put on sexy heels/dress/smoking lipstick & meet one of my sexy gals for lunch or wine or G&T in our hammocks or lie in our outdoor spa with funky tunes
Ohhhh I like the sound of that Debra 🙂
Vitamin Sea and dancing are my go too – and man are they getting a work out! Great timing with this piece ❤
Love you jo, I hope there’s more light and less shadow in your days lovely xxx

Jo I love the viatamin sea too, take care of yourself hun. Sending you a big hug xxx
The blahs, that is soo where I’ve been for too long now. That explains why I’ve been keen to volunteer and a bit obsessive about donating to a good cause recently. Obviously self medicating without knowing it. I might have to try some others. Thanks Jen ?
Volunteering is lovely but looka after yourself first…take care x
my happy place is my sewing machine, the world could end when I am sewing I reckon and I wouldn’t notice 🙂
